Some of the first homes completed under the Community Housing Growth Strategy were officially opened earlier this month by Housing Minister Bill Marmion.
The seven townhouses in Mandurah were built by community housing organisation Access Housing Australia Limited, as part of a combined growth target for eight community housing organisations (CHOs) of up to 500 units over the next 10 years.

Director, Housing Programs, Peter Lonsdale said that in 2010 Cabinet endorsed the Community Housing Growth Strategy with a key element being the transfer of housing assets to the community housing sector.
“This will enable them to grow their businesses and leverage assets to increase the supply of social and affordable housing stock,” he said.
“As at the end of February 2013, 1,400 housing assets have been transferred to eight CHOs.
“The Department is very pleased that Access Housing has completed their first round of accommodation under the growth project.”
The seven terrace homes in the Mandurah complex consist of two bedrooms and one bathroom.  They were designed by Peter Hunt Architects and built by BGC.  Construction commenced in May 2012 and was completed in March 2013.

Peter Lonsdale said that these homes are one example of the new accommodation Access Housing has built under the growth program.
“Four villas in Eaton and 17 villas in Capel have recently reached completion and will house over 55s who have mobility issues,” he said.
“Another 110 growth properties are currently under construction by the eight CHOs who have signed the Community Housing Growth Strategy.
“These properties are located across the State, and include accommodation in Broome, Australind and Albany.
“The growth commitments under the Community Housing Agreement form an important part of the State Government’s Affordable Housing Strategy, which aims to provide 20,000 affordable housing options by 2020," Peter said.
“By working in partnership with the Community Housing Sector we are already well underway to achieving this goal."
The first 110 properties are expected to be completed by mid 2014.
