The Department of Housing and community housing provider Stellar Living Ltd have partnered to deliver 22 new homes for pensioners and families in the Mandurah suburb of Erskine.

Housing Minister Colin Holt officially opened the homes on Friday 8 May and took the opportunity to meet the new tenants who all came from the Department’s wait list in the Peel region.

In his speech, Minister Holt described how appropriate affordable housing was in high demand in the region.

“Mandurah has one of the highest proportions of people aged 65-plus in Western Australia and the type of housing predicted to increase the most in demand in the region is single-person accommodation. The Erskine development helps meet this demand with 16 homes for aged pensioners and 6 for families,” he said.

The Department contributed $3.4 million to the development, which funded the construction of 19 of the 22 units. Under the Department’s growth strategy, Stellar Living Ltd funded the other three units and will invest the profits from the development into more community housing in Western Australia.

"Partnerships with community housing providers like Stellar help lift some of the burden from the State Government. There are only a very small percentage of public housing tenants who give them a bad name; the majority are people who need roofs over their heads so they can live in peace," Minister Holt said.

A key element of the Affordable Housing Strategy is the transfer of housing assets to community housing organisations like Stellar to enable them to grow their businesses and leverage assets to increase the supply of social and affordable housing stock.

The Erskine Development project demonstrates how close cooperation between the Department, community housing organisations and the private building sector can increase the supply of social and affordable housing in Western Australia.
