Housing runs for Reconciliation

Run for reconciliation
Housing Authority staff members Libby, Bre and Leighton at the Perth City to Surf

A strong contingent of Housing Authority staff members took part in the Perth City to Surf on Saturday, 27 August to show support for Activ Foundation and people with a disability, and to display their commitment to reconciliation between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians.

About 20 Housing Authority employees entered the event as part of the ‘Run for Reconciliation’ – a joint initiative between Reconciliation WA, ICEA and the Indigenous Consulting Group that provides an opportunity for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people to run and walk together to promote reconciliation. The Housing Authority has sponsored this initiative since its inception in 2014.

As the largest community sporting event in the State, the Perth City to Surf provided a valuable opportunity to acknowledge the shared history of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians and gain exposure for the cause.

There was a highly visible Run for Reconciliation presence throughout the event, with Welcome to Country presentations delivered ahead of three race legs and Noongar cultural activities and entertainment available for all to enjoy at the race end.

Non-Indigenous co-chair of the Housing Authority’s Reconciliation Action Plan Committee, Mark Goerke, said he was pleased the initiative was so well supported by the agency and its staff.

“The committee is always delighted that the Authority is a proud sponsor of Run for Reconciliation and is thankful to staff who participated in the run this year,” he said.
