The release of 38 residential lots within the Osprey Estate development in South Hedland has resulted in an oversubscription of registrations from prospective owner-occupiers.

Bounded by Murdoch Drive to the north, Collier Drive to the south and North Circular Road to the east, the lots, which range in size from 305 to 585 square meters, were priced from $260,000 and mark the beginning of a 165-hectare estate.

General Manager of Commercial and Business Operations for the Department of Housing, Paul Whyte stated that the interest in the land release confirms market research for the area.

“This release has been a high-priority commitment for the Department of Housing in order to ease Hedland’s severe housing shortage,” Mr Whyte said.

“Stage one of this project will produce 366 lots, part of which will be delivered as part of the Department’s affordable housing strategy.”

Following this release, there will be subsequent releases of duplex lots as well as single, cottage and group sites where house and land packages will also be made available.

The estate will feature a primary school, public open space and additional lots are planned for the rural portion of the site, which are currently subject to rezoning. A portion of the site will also cater to key workers within the area, with 293 affordable rental dwellings being developed across 12 hectares.

“The Key Worker Village will boost housing availability within Hedland by providing short-term accommodation of six months or longer for low-to-moderate income workers,” Mr Whyte said.

“By providing housing at the key worker village employees can afford to live in the community they support and employers can attract and retain the staff they need, which helps to build a sustainable community,” Mr Whyte said.
