Newman service worker units boost affordable housing options

Newman Service Worker Accommodation

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman and Housing Minister Bill Marmion today opened 10 rental units in Newman, increasing affordable housing options for service workers in the town.
Designed for both singles and couples, the two-bedroom, two-bathroom quality units in Homestead Ramble will provide long-term support for workers in local businesses and community organisations.
Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the dwellings, funded through the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program, were part of a wider strategy to address low housing availability and high accommodation costs for key workers living in the North-West of the State.
“The ongoing economic growth of the Pilbara relies on the availability of affordable, appropriate and attractive accommodation for key workers, and this initiative is important in helping to attract and retain workers who play a key role in delivering essential community services in Newman,” Mr Redman said.
Housing Minister Bill Marmion said the viability of towns like Newman depended on small-to-medium sized businesses providing essential services being able to attract and retain staff.
“Service workers play vital roles in local economies, as they provide much-needed services to ensure that communities are sustainable and include childcare workers, shop assistants, hairdressers, not-for-profit community workers, and tradespeople,” Mr Marmion said.
“This development will help to address the immediate demand for affordable service worker housing in Newman and continue to support a number of local enterprises and services.”
Mr Redman said the $6.6million project was another example of the Government’s successful Royalties for Regions program building productive and sustainable communities in regional Western Australia.
