Construction begins on new service worker housing in Newman

Affordable housing for service workers in Newman is about to get a boost with the construction of 10 two-bedroom affordable rental dwellings on Homestead Ramble now under way.
Western Australian developer and builder, Megara Constructions, was awarded the $4.18million tender for the East Newman residential estate, funded as part of the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program.
Housing Minister Bill Marmion said the new dwellings would provide more affordable accommodation options for service workers and help to alleviate some of the pressures experienced in the town as a result of the critical housing shortage and high rents.
“The Department of Housing is aware of the strong demand for more affordable housing in Newman due to its continued liaison with local residents and these new dwellings will provide some rental reprieve for key service workers in the town,” Mr Marmion said.
Service workers are employees of small and medium businesses across a range of industries including retail, tourism, health and hospitality.
The 10 new two-bedroom dwellings will be offered at a discount of around 40 per cent on market rent.
Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the initiative was important to attract and retain workers who play a key role in delivering essential community services.
“This initiative brings rent relief to a number of people that may otherwise have had to relocate due to the shortage and cost of rentals in Newman,” Mr Redman said.
“It also supports the Newman town centre improvements that offer new opportunities to live, work and invest in this growing town.”
The 10 dwellings are expected to be available for occupancy from the end of June 2014. An allocation process will commence early this year and will be open to small and medium-sized businesses as well as employers earning below $100,000 per annum.
