Osprey Village in South Hedland was officially opened today, with more than 120 households already occupying the 293-unit community.
Housing Minister Bill Marmion and Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the project was providing vital affordable accommodation for local workers.
The $95million project was undertaken through the State Government’s Royalties for Regions - Housing for Workers program in collaboration with the Department of Housing and Fleetwood Corporation.
Mr Marmion said the workers village was an important step forward in providing quality, affordable accommodation in the Pilbara, where there was still a gap between household incomes and the average cost of housing.
“Osprey Village has enabled employers to attract and retain the staff they need, thereby helping to build and maintain a sustainable community,” he said.
“The Osprey Village project was fast tracked for development.
“We have also made housing bond assistance loans available to help more people move in to the village quickly.”
Mr Redman said Osprey Village was a rapidly growing community proving popular with workers in key service industries.
“The 12-hectare South Hedland site provides fully-contained, contemporary housing options for key workers in an attractive setting, designed to encourage a strong sense of community,” he said.
“Royalties for Regions’ investment in providing more affordable housing options for residents across the Pilbara will help support continued population growth and economic development in the region.”
The Ministers welcomed the formation of a residents’ association to support continuing development of the Osprey community.
