Probationary Tenancy Trial

About the Trial

The Department of Housing will trial probationary tenancies for new tenants over a period of 12 months in the Fremantle zone.

The Trial is designed to encourage tenants to do the right thing. The Department will monitor compliance with tenancy obligations under the Residential Tenancies Act 1987 during the first 6 months of a new tenancy.

When will the Trial start?

The Trial will commence in July 2015.

Who will this effect?

The Trial only applies to public housing applicants who are allocated a property in the Fremantle zone within the first 6 months of the trial period.

The Trial applies to new applicants under the age of 55. It also applies to all previous tenants with a poor tenancy history, where housing assistance is subject to conditions under the Department’s Eligibility Policy relating to Further Assistance.

Tenants are expected to:

  • pay their rent
  • look after their property, and
  • be a good neighbour

What does the Trial mean?

Tenants who comply with all of their obligations after the first 6 months will be offered a periodic tenancy.

Tenants may be offered a further 6 month tenancy in order to demonstrate they can meet their tenancy obligations.

Tenants who fail to meet their obligations will not have their tenancy renewed.
