Significant investment in social housing

A $560 million investment in social housing will halve the number of seniors and families currently on the priority waitlist.
This significant investment was announced by Housing Minister Colin Holt on 10 May 2015.
The investment would deliver 1,000 additional homes, which will be built, purchased or leased over the next two years to benefit the most vulnerable people on the priority waitlist for social housing.
The $560 million package is part of the 2015-16 State Budget. It will utilise $85 million of Department of Housing land, along with $452 million of land and housing development expenditure and $23 million in operational costs.
The focus will be on constructing new homes, augmented by spot-purchasing or pre-purchasing competitively priced dwellings, leasing private rental stock and renewal of existing public housing sites.
Tania Loosely-Smith, General Manger Strategy and Policy said the package complemented the broader initiatives of the Department’s Affordable Housing Strategy.
“In 2015/16 and 2016/17, the Department will continue to work with industry to commence at least 2,200 new homes, inclusive of this initiative,” Ms Loosley said.
“The package will support infill development – transforming under-optimised public housing sites in metropolitan and regional WA into new housing.
“Some of the new housing created will be retained for social housing, and some sold to the general market.”
The Affordable Housing Strategy – first of its kind in Australia – has delivered more than 18,000 affordable homes since 2010.
