Social housing for seniors

The Housing Authority is working in partnership with Bethanie Housing Limited to provide social housing for seniors

With Australia's ageing population, the provision of housing options for seniors is increasingly important.

Anglicare Australia's 2015 Rental Affordability Snapshot highlighted this issue, pointing out that the aged care and pension systems have been effectively designed for home owners and the poverty rate after housing costs had been deducted was significantly higher for seniors who did not own their own home.

In recent years, the Housing Authority has worked in partnership with Bethanie Housing Limited to address this issue and deliver much needed social housing for seniors.

Bethanie Housing is a registered Community Housing Provider and approved Growth Provider. Bethanie owns a total of 281 properties in WA, primarily due to 264 asset transfers from the Housing Authority. This figure includes the Peel I development, which Bethanie constructed in 2011 using grant funds from the Housing Authority. Peel I delivered 96 much needed one and two bedroom independent living units for seniors in the suburb of Coodanup in the Peel region.

Peel II is the final stage of the Bethanie Peel development and will deliver an additional 98 one and two bedroom units for seniors.

45 of the 98 units in the Peel II development will be funded by the Housing Authority. Of these, 24 will count towards the Social Housing Investment Package (SHIP) target.  The first stage of the project is expected to be ready for occupancy by March 2017 and the second stage by May 2017.

The Bethanie Peel Village is supported by onsite management and communal facilities such as a club room, library, gym, mini golf, billiard tables, hairdressing salon, playground, craft room and BBQs. It is also located in close proximity to established amenities including the Mandurah Forum Shopping Centre and the Mandurah Train Station.

Peel II will also provide the opportunity to transition aged tenants out of under-occupied social housing into secure, supported accommodation that better suits their needs as they grow older.
