South-West land use agreements signed

In June six historic Indigenous Land Use Agreements (ILUAs) covering 200,000 square kilometres of the South-West of Western Australia were signed by the State Government and six Noongar claim groups.
The execution of the ILUAs was a significant step on the path towards the largest native title settlement in Australian history, resolving all native title claims in the South-West in exchange for approximately $1.3 billion in land and other benefits.
In a lead up to the historic signing, A/Chief Executive Officer Paul Whyte represented the Housing Authority at an event in which the ILUAs were signed by the heads of various Government agencies that are a party to the ILUAs, including Housing.

The execution of the ILUAs is the next significant step forward since the ‘Working Together’ document was signed with the South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council (SWALSC) in September 2013.

“Housing’s key contribution to the South West Settlement is the transfer of 121 properties to a new independent trust which will be established to represent the six claim areas,” Mr Whyte said.
“In addition to the property transfers, we are working with the SWALSC to investigate economic development and employment opportunities for the Noongar people.
“It is anticipated that the South West Settlement will commence in full in July 2016. Preparatory work and other related activities will start to ramp up as we work toward this date.
“The execution of the ILUAs is an important milestone in self-determination by Aboriginal people, and the Department has an important part to play in this process. We are looking forward to a very productive relationship with the SWALSC and the new trust going forward.”
More information on the signing of the ILUAs is available from the Premier’s media release.
