WA continues to lead the nation on remote housing delivery

NPARIH targets

Western Australia continues to lead the country on goals set under the National Partnership Agreement on Remote Indigenous Housing (NPARIH) program, exceeding targets for the fifth consecutive year.

A total of 115 new homes and 256 refurbishments were completed by the Department of Housing in the 2013/14 financial year, against a target of 107 new homes and 256 refurbishments set by the Commonwealth Government. In the five years to date the Department has completed 497 new homes and 1,288 refurbishments.

Graeme Jones, Executive Director, Client Services North and Aboriginal Housing said Western Australia is the only state to consistently reach and exceed its targets under the NPARIH program, overcoming the difficulties of working in some of the most remote parts of the country.

“WA has continued to lead the country in delivering improved housing outcomes to remote Indigenous communities through the hard work and dedication of our staff here at Housing,” he said.

“The Department’s use of early starts and planning to maximise the use of the dry season has contributed to achieving the NPARIH targets.

“This highly complex piece of work involved detailed planning in the areas of essential services, native title, heritage and contract negotiations.”

Mr Jones said that WA’s success in delivering new homes and refurbishments to remote Indigenous communities shows Housing’s commitment to providing homes for those most in need throughout the State.

“The Department’s success in the past five years demonstrates that we are committed to closing the gap towards Indigenous disadvantage and providing better outcomes for those in our most remote areas,” he said.

The NPARIH program provides the State with $1.18b over 10 years and requires 1,012 new houses to be built and 1,288 refurbishments to be completed by 30 June 2018.

The NPARIH program includes a competitive bids process based on performance in delivery of capital works against targets negotiated with the Commonwealth Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.
